'The Leftovers' Season 3 News: Will There Be A Fourth Or Fifth Installment Of Damon Lindelof Drama?

Before 2015 ended, HBO dropped the news that it has renewed its critically-acclaimed TV series "The Leftovers" for a third season.

"It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind The Leftovers for its third and final season," HBO president Michael Lombardo said in a statement, as cited over at TVLine.

Considered by many as a TV underdog by critics and viewers alike, the Justin Theroux-led drama based on Perrotta's novel of the same name is probably one of the phenomenal scripted programs in the airwaves as of late. It tells the stories of families when a number of their family members mysteriously vanished during the global event they called "Sudden Departure."

Season 1 unraveled the effect of the Rapture on the people whose lives have greatly changed. The latest follow-up installment finds the major characters relocating to Jarden, Texas – a miracle place where it was claimed that no one has disappeared.

What they believed to be a safe haven turns out to be untrue, however. Season 3 is expected to unravel more about the mystery of the widespread disappearance. Will this be the show's last run?

Theroux, who plays the lead character of Kevin Garvey, revealed to Slashfilm this month that Lindelof already gave them an advance warning that show might not follow the traditional seven-season run and could only have a lifespan of at most four years. For Theroux, ending the show while it is still on its peak is a brilliant move from Lindelof and the network.

"I like knowing there's an end to the story. I can't imagine something worse than scripts being written into a tunnel, thinking, 'I don't know when this ends. I don't know.' It usually ends when people get sick of it, but I think it's great when it gets to end on its own terms," the actor told the media outlet.

In a separate interview with the website, executive producer Lindelof said that the third season will be much different from the first two chapters. Season 3 might touch on what transpired in Season 1 and 2. However, the entirety of the installment will basically serve as a foothold for that big finale moment.
