'The Young and the Restless' news, cast, spoilers: Michael E. Knight joins the cast as Y&R leads daytime soaps

The cast of "The Young and the Restless" (Y&R) will definitely have a major addition as Michael E. Knight was recently confirmed to join the long-running soap opera.

According to TV Insider, Knight will be taking on the recurring role of Dr. Simon Neville. There aren't much details to his character yet, except that he will be a doctor with mysterious intentions. It is expected that he will appear on the soap around Oct. 15, as he started shooting for the show on Wednesday. Knight, who has three Emmy awards under his name, already had a recurring role in a soap as Tad Martin in "All My Children" (AMC) and in "One Life to Live." He had been part of AMC since 1983 until it got canceled in 2011, and his character became less of a regular in the latter part of the series. He also appeared in an episode of NCIS last year.

StarPulse reports that it would have been ideal if he joined Y&R earlier so it would have coincided with Cady McClain's appearance. Knight and McClain had shared a number of scenes on AMC, and many would have been excited to see their chemistry reignited on the TV screen.

Knight's arrival may bring more twists to the story of Y&R, as soap operas today badly need something to keep audience attention and interest, which has been increasingly challenging. For now, Y&R leads the daytime soap genre, having an average of 5 million viewers. Although being in the top spot sounds like a good position, the comparatively lesser views compared to that a decade ago is the ultimate proof that interest in soap opera has drastically dropped. Aside from adding more twists, including stars with established fanbases is another way to generate more viewers.

The Young and the Restless airs every weekdays, on CBS.
