'This is Us' Creator Drops Clues About Jack's Death
The premiere of "This is Us" season 2 dropped a massive hint about Jack's death (Milo Ventimiglia) —a burned-out house. The whole story remains unclear, but creator Dan Fogelman admitted that the fire has something to do with his death.
"You've seen a lot of pieces—this was always the plan for the Big Three," Fogelman stated at a panel following the premiere. "We had talked about the fire and what happened from Day 1 of starting."
According to the creator, the story of the Pearson patriarch's demise will continue to unfold throughout the season. He said, "A lot of the little things are going to come into play over the course of this season. All the answers about how Jack died, it's all going to happen this season."
The creator hinted that every little detail teased in the premiere matters and that nothing was made accidentally. He urges viewers to pay close attention to the last two minutes of the episode.
Fogelman emphasized a few clues which many might have overlooked — the dog which Kate (Chrissy Metz) was holding, Randall's (Sterling K. Brown) girlfriend, Rebecca's (Mandy Moore) Pittsburgh Steelers jersey, and Kevin's (Justin Hartley) broken leg. He said that audiences will learn the stories behind these clues and eventually discover the bigger piece of the puzzle.
To recap the premiere, Jack died in 1997, when the Pearson kids were only 19. Kate was the one to inform Kevin of their father's death, as he was elsewhere when the family found out about it. Apparently, making out with some girl. And for unknown reasons, his leg was in a cast.
Fogelman said that the second season of "This is Us" is going to be packed with comedy and sadness. Audiences should expect heavy heart-wrenching drama as well.
"This is Us" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
