'This is Us' Season 1 Episode 3 Spoilers, Air Date and Updates: Episode 2 Revealed New Twist; What Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia Thinks
NBC's new dramedy series "This is Us" continues to enjoy rave reviews, and it's showing no signs of letting up. Its second episode, "The Big Three," packed yet another mind-blowing twist, proving viewers that it's more than just a one-hit pilot. This time, the surprise centered on Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), who apparently broke up sometime between the 1980s and the present-day timeline.
Like the pilot, "This is Us" featured multi-timeline jumps, planting several tiny foreshadowing hints that leads towards the big reveal in the end. This time, it came in the form of Miguel (Jon Huertas), Milo's best friend, who is later found out to be Rebecca's current timeline husband. Even more surprising, however, is that Rebecca was still wearing the necklace Jack gave her, which likely meant that the two didn't break up, but that Jack somehow died instead.
What went down
Fans would recall that during the premiere, it's revealed that Jack and Rebecca were actually the parents of "The Big Three": Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown). The kids' timelines were set in the present day, while the parents' stories were still in the 1970-1980s.
The second "This is Us" episode saw to Milo and Rebecca going through a particularly rough patch in their marriage. With their eight-year-old kids, both parents are struggling with their own issues: Rebecca, being a stay-at-home mom, while Jack worked late nights and spent most of it in bars. Eventually, Rebecca has had enough and confronts Jack in a big way, who then promised to be a "12" from now on.
Meanwhile, at the bar, Milo met with his best friend Miguel, who also confronted him in the same way. The latter chided Milo, saying he "married way above his station," and warned him that he shouldn't give Rebecca a reason to notice that she settled. Miguel later on ate his words and apologized, but his subtle interest (and observation) of Rebecca was the first hint towards the big twist.
Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia on the twist
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "This is Us" leading actor Milo Ventimiglia asked the same questions viewers have been asking since the second episode. "Are they all dead, are they all alive?" Mandy Moore chimed in teasingly, asking "Were they divorced? Did they die?" without so much as a hint to the answers.
However, Mandy Moore revealed that she was "rooting for Jack and Rebecca," and is raring to find out where the disconnect happened and where the couple will go from there. The third episode of "This is Us" will air on Tuesday, October 4, on NBC.
