Tommy Wiseau's 'The Room' Gets Wide Theatrical Release After 14 Years

Fourteen years after its premiere, "The Room" is finally getting a wide theatrical release. The cult movie by Tommy Wiseau initially premiered in 2003 and is considered by many as the worst film ever made.

Directed and created by Tommy Wiseau, the cult classic screened in selected theaters in California in 2003 shortly after its release. Despite its horrendous theme, it has since garnered a huge cult following. Even today, midnight showings of the film in major cities in America continue to draw large crowds.

Since "The Room," Wiseau has been a favorite pop culture icon because of his eccentric and mysterious behavior. In fact, he is so mysterious that nobody even knows how old he actually is, where he is from and how he was able to fund "The Room" all by himself.

Owing to its timeless appeal, Fathom Events is showing the film in more than 500 cinemas in the United States next year. On Jan. 10, the film will get its wide release, a month after "The Disaster Artist" hits theaters. Directed by James Franco, "The Disaster Artist" is a film about the making of "The Room."

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming release of his cult classic, Wiseau said: "It's really great because it's going to tackle the other areas where people aren't aware of the room still. I've never called it a cult phenomenon, or whatever they call it. I call it a free expression, that's what 'The Room' represents. I encourage people to express themselves in the screenings. A ton of people ask me, 'Why do you encourage that?' I say, 'Why not?' What I wanted was to give them a smile and it's their choice if they want to express themselves."

"The Room" tells the story of Johnny (Wiseau) and his best friend Marc (Greg Sestero), who are both caught up in a love triangle with Johnny's wife Lisa (Juliette Danielle.
