Trebek's 'Magic Johnson' Reaction is Priceless: Contestant Misses Easiest NHL Question Ever (VIDEO)

Alex Trebek's response to the answer "Magic Johnson" on the "Jeopardy!" game show recently was just short of disbelief. The host had asked a question about a hockey legend, but the befuddled contestant answered with a basketball legend instead.

A contestant, Joe, seemed to be doing well during the round of "Jeopardy!" when he said the boneheaded answer. He picked the very last square in the "Sports Superstars" category, but the question there didn't seem to be all that difficult.

"100+ assists in an NHL season has been accomplished only 13 times, 11 times by this player," Trebek read.

"Who is Magic Johnson?" Joe said.

The incredulity in Trebek's voice was palpable as he said a muffled "oh no." Almost as bad was the answer that came from a fellow contestant: "Wayne Gretzky." He is far and wide recognized as one of the greatest NHL players to ever play hockey.

Trebek wasn't done with Joe, though, and chastised him for his blunder.

"We're talking about hockey, not the NBA," Trebek said.

Joe attempted to explain his actions during the show on Reddit during an AskMeAnything session about "Jeopardy!"

"I totally missed the NHL part and focused on the assists. Just a terribly embarrassing answer all around," he said via his Reddit account MiloMuggins. Interestingly enough, had the question been about basketball, Joe could have been correct— Earvin "Magic" Johnson is the NBA all-time leader in assists with an average of 11.2 per game.

Contestants' microphones are muted after they answer, which was probably fortunate for Joe, as his response to his own gaffe wasn't too pleasant.

"You can see me mouth the word 's---!'" Joe said.

Not all was lost after that question, though. Joe went on to win "Jeopardy!" that day.
