Trump's Georgia indictment: 5 things to know
Social media snapshots reveal prosecutor bringing the charges against Trump has raised questions about elections in Georgia
Fani Willis, the Fulton County District Attorney behind the charges against Trump, has become the subject of scrutiny and outrage among the former president’s most vocal supporters. In a thread posted on X Thursday, conservative commentator Benny Johnson shared screenshots of Willis’ social media posts raising questions about the way elections were conducted in Georgia in both 2018 and 2020.
A Facebook post published by Willis on Nov. 3, 2020, which remains visible on her account to this day, contains a link to a news article with the headline “Absentee ballot counting in Georgia’s most populous county delayed 4 hours after a water pipe burst.” In a caption accompanying the post, published on Election Day 2020, Willis asked “Why Fulton?”
The first social media post shared by Johnson featured Willis proclaiming that “A TEAM of lawyers needs to watch them count every single VOTE.” Willis raised doubts about the validity of the vote-counting process in Georgia, much like Trump did in the days and weeks following the 2020 election: “They can start in Fulton where we are having water leaks. What ballots are they throwing out? Georgia lets give an honest accounting. No stunts!”

Another screenshot in the thread, from Nov. 5, 2020, shows Willis sharing a picture of an electoral map sloppily colored in with crayons, which suggested that the vote-counting process was in chaos two days after the election. “Trying to smile through this mess,” she remarked.

In 2018, Willis called for a recount of all ballots in heavily Democratic Fulton County “to make sure all votes [are] counted.” That Facebook post came as Democrat gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams was raising questions about the validity of the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election results.
