Two Crippled Elephants Meet After 22-Year Separation - See Heartwarming Reunion (VIDEO)
Shirley and Jenny met at the circus, but it's not as fun as it sounds. The two are elephants who were captured and forced into service for the show. The ordeal was crippling, and then they were separated for 22 years.
However, the two would finally reunite at The Elephant Sanctuary, a 2,700-acre preserve for Asian and African elephants in Hohenwald, Tenn. When Shirley arrived at the sanctuary, employees didn't know how she would react to seeing an elephant after 20 years, but when she met Tarra, it was nothing but warmth.
When Shirley finally sees Jenny at the end of her first day, the two are so excited that they bend the steel bars that stand between them at the time. Once the cage is opened, the two nuzzle together, a greeting between two old friends.
Also, keep an ear out for Shirley's old handler, Solomon, who's broken up about saying goodbye to his beloved friend. His words have stuck with me even more than the elephants' touching reunion.
"She don't have to wear that chain any more. When I saw this place, I told her, 'There'll be no more chain,'" Solomon says, emotional.
"I don't know who's the first to put on a chain on her, but I'm glad to know that I was the last to take it off."
