U.N. Endorses Resolution Honoring the Family
On Tuesday, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the Doha resolution proposed by Qatar.
The draft resolution was worked out at the Doha International Conference for the Family in Doha, Qatar, where more than 1000 representatives of governments and members of civil society met on November 29-30, 2004 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family.
An address to the General Assembly made at the conference gathering said the conference worked to “reaffirm the importance and centrality of the family” and uphold the proclamation made by The Universal Declaration of Human Rights that the family is the “natural and fundamental group unit of society… entitled to protection by society and the State”.

"This is a great day for the family, for men, for women, and for children,” said William Saunders, Senior Fellow of Family Research Council, who was present at Tuesday’s vote.
“The world is united, at least on this one point: the family founded upon marriage is the bedrock of a healthy society. Government's role is to help create conditions which lead to the formation and the sustenance of healthy families. The reaffirmation of the original international consensus on these points gives us hope that the UN's observation of the International Year of the Family, rather than being a mere formality, marks the beginning of a united international effort on behalf of the family."
