'Uncharted' Movie Release Date Updates: R-Rated Script Not Supported by Naughty Dog
After years of initial planning and multiple drawbacks in production, the film adaptation for Naughty Dog's action-adventure game, "Uncharted," is finally set to start filming by spring of 2017. However, the game's developer confirms that the script of the movie did not have its blessing.
Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann posted a tweet clarifying that "no one at Naughty Dog has read the script." It went on to say that they have "no idea what the movie is about let alone its tone."
Druckmann also emphasized that he wished the writers of the upcoming "Uncharted" film would stop implying that they, the developers, were lending their support for it.
The creative director's statements were in reply to film writer Joe Carnahan's interview with Collider wherein he stated, "What I've heard is the Naughty Dog guys are really happy with it. But who knows?" Carnahan, however, also added that what he heard could be something "like Donald Trump hearing something; that may not be true at all."
Even without Naughty Dog's support, Carnahan shared that the script of the "Uncharted" movie garnered enthusiasm from its game publisher, Sony. "It got a big round of applause at Sony, they were very, very happy with it," he said.
In addition, Carnahan revealed that he wrote the script according to how the game was made and is now classified with an R-rating. "I definitely didn't write it as a PG-13 movie. I wrote it the way that movie should be written," he said.
The R-rating, however, worries some people for it had been historically proven that most films with this rating don't really do well when it comes to box office sales compared to movies with a PG-13 rating.
The "Uncharted" movie will be directed by Shawn Levy. Carnahan completed the script in January, and filming is slated to begin by spring in Colombia. A new release date has not been announced yet, though the movie was originally set for a May 2016 premiere.
