'Vikings' Season 4 News, Spoilers: Katheryn Winnick Hints at 'Big Shift' Ahead for Lagertha and Other Characters
History aired the much-anticipated fourth season premiere of its Irish-Canadian historical drama series "Vikings" on Thursday, Feb. 18.
In it, viewers found legendary Viking warrior Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) confined to his sick bed in Kattegat as his son Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) has his friend Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) arrested for the murder of the Anglo-Saxon monk Athelstan (George Blagden), his brother Rollo (Clive Standen) betrays the Vikings, and his first love Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) agrees to a joint Earldom with Hedeby villager Kalf (Ben Robson).
Winnick recently opened up to Entertainment Weekly about what's ahead for her character, the former noble shieldmaiden Lagertha, and revealed that she will "come into her own" in the latter half of the current season.
"There's going to be a big shift, as you'll see towards [episodes] 15-16 of our season," Winnick said. "There's gonna be a big transition with each character, not just Lagertha. She's always been reliant on other people for power and status, and I think in this season she's come into her own, and become her own individual, her own entity, her own person."
Now that Kalf has gotten his way and made Ragnar's first wife an Earl of Hedeby, what's next for the two? How much of Kalf and Lagertha's agreement is legitimate? As "Vikings" showrunner Michael Hirst told The Hollywood Reporter, Kalf has loved Lagertha for a long time and does want to share power with her and marry her.
"He's discovered that what matters to him is not power so much as her," Hirst said. Lagertha's feelings, meanwhile, are mixed. According to the "Vikings" boss, "She said she could never forgive him for taking away her earldom and that's a problematic area."
According to the TV Guide synopsis for the next "Vikings" episode, "Kill The Queen" sees Ragnar and Floki still at odds as Rollo tries to win over Princess Gisla and the wilderness tests Bjorn's survival skills. Meanwhile, King Ecbert (Linus Roach) tasks his son Aethelwulf (Moe Dunford) with rescuing Queen Kwenthrith (Amy Bailey).
"Vikings" airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on History.
