Washington Redskins Rumors 2016: Kirk Cousins, Redskins Fail to Reach Agreement

Kirk Cousins was one of the leading personalities that took the Washington Redskins to the playoffs last season, but the quarterback appears to be heading to a different direction at the end of the season with the news that he and the Redskins have ended contract negotiations.

Although he still will be Washington's starting quarterback when the season opens, there still is a possibility that the Redskins will place a tag on him. This really has been a negotiations disaster from the start, with the team signifying their intention to sign him on a long-term contract, but at the same time admitting in private to Cousins that they only will talk long term if the price is right. And since they couldn't reach an agreement about that price, there is a possibility that Washington will place the franchise tag on him, which in simpler terms, means that they might have to pay him $20 million for a year's worth.

So if Cousins decides to test the market, he definitely will earn a lot more considering that the league is right now in a quite short supply of good quarterbacks. As for the Redskins, they only have until March 1 to place that franchise tag.

To be more specific, the NFL combine begins on Feb. 23, and if ever the Redskins fail to put the tag or perhaps sign Cousins to a long-term contract by March 9, then it means he will officially test the market for potential offers.

By taking a closer look at all the factors involved, it seems like the only problem is the disagreement of both parties to Cousins' value as a player. Yes, Washington couldn't afford to lose him, not in this latest league trend where no team can win without a great quarterback. By all accounts, all this talk may simply be nothing but manifesting each other's bravado and will eventually lead to resuming negotiations in a week's time.
