Chrome Sustains Dominance; Microsoft Offers Cash Reward as Users Continue to Drop

Google Chrome remains the undisputed champion in the web browser market share wars. As of August 22, the freeware internet browser continues to widen its lead from Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Safari.

Chrome Users Increased in July

According to the latest projection of web tracker Net Market Share, Chrome reached its all-time high number of users in July, obtaining a global market share of 50.95 percent. It registered a significant increase from its 48.65 percent market share in June.

The latest figures mean that Chrome serves as the main web browser of one in two computers across the globe. It can be recalled that Chrome ended the longtime dominance of IE as the world's widely used web browser starting April this year.


Performance of Other Web Browsers

IE remained Chrome's closest competitor, however, its number of users dwindled. From 31.65 percent in June, the market share of Microsoft's old web browser dropped to 29.60 percent in July. Meanwhile, Edge, the successor of IE, remained stagnant at 5.09 percent for two months in a row.

Moreover, Firefox slightly improved its market share from 7.98 percent in June to 8.12 percent in July. On the other hand, the market share of Safari dropped from 4.64 percent in June to 4.51 percent in July.

August Web Browser Market Share Wars

Net Market Share is yet to release its projection of the web browser market share in August. But according to Clicky, as of August 22, Chrome continues to reign among other internet browsers, obtaining a global market share of 53.93 percent.

Despite the arrival of Windows 10 Anniversary Update on August 2 that featured an improved Edge, Microsoft's new internet browser remained less popular with a market share of 4.43 percent.

Moreover, Firefox and IE recorded the same market share of 16.45 percent. On the other hand, Safari remained the least known internet browser with its market share of 7.81 percent.

Microsoft Offers Cash Reward

Microsoft's transition from IE to Edge resulted to the tech giant's loss of millions of web browser users. Despite efforts to boost the popularity of Edge, internet users continue to shun the new web browser.

But Microsoft is not giving up yet. In its bid to entice more internet users to use Edge, according to The Sun, the company now offers cash rewards to people across the U.S. who will switch from Chrome.

Interested internet users may sign up to Microsoft Rewards. They will receive points depending on how long they spend using Edge each day.
