Web Browser Market Share Wars for June 2016: Google Chrome vs Microsoft Internet Explorer vs Mozilla Firefox vs Edge vs Safari

Chrome Continues to Dominate; Microsoft Loses Millions of Users

Google Chrome has sustained its dominance in the web browser wars after it widened its market share lead from its closest rival Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) in June. Moreover, Microsoft Edge, although far from becoming one of the most popular internet browsers, managed to keep on increasing its market share as Mozilla Firefox users dwindled.

Google Chrome Is Still the World's Most Popular Web Browser

According to the latest figures released by web tracker Net Market Share, Chrome is still the world's most popular browser after it obtained a market share of 48.65 percent in June. This means that Chrome is the main internet browser of almost one in two computers worldwide. It registered a significant increase from its 45.63 percent market share in May.

Meanwhile, Chrome's closest competitor IE settled in the second spot of the web browser wars with a solid market share of 31.65 percent. The popularity of Microsoft's old web browser has notably dropped from its 33.71 percent market share in May.

Chrome has ended the longtime supremacy of IE as the world's most popular web browser starting April this year. The dwindling popularity of IE was attributed to Microsoft's transition from IE to Edge, which is the present pre-installed web browser of Windows 10.

Microsoft Edge Is Slowly Gaining Strength

While the popularity of IE seemed to be fading, Microsoft's new web browser Edge appeared to be gaining strength. Edge increased its market share in June to 5.09 percent from 4.99 percent in May.

Figures also showed that Edge managed to keep its lead from Safari and Opera that obtained 4.64 percent and 1.63 percent market shares respectively. Moreover, Microsoft's new internet browser also narrowed the lead of Firefox, the third most popular web browser in the world. Firefox's market share dwindled from 8.91 percent in May to 7.98 percent in June.

The growth of Edge was triggered by the increased market share of Windows 10. According to Windowsreport, the latest OS of Microsoft currently runs on 19.14 percent of computers worldwide.

Microsoft Lost 33 Million Web Browser Users in June

The combined global web browser market share of Microsoft IE and Edge in June is 36.74 percent. Despite the growing popularity of Edge, Microsoft's total web browser market share was down by 1.9 percent compared to its overall share in May.

Computer World estimated that Microsoft lost around 33 million web browsers in June. So far this year, it is projected that the tech giant has already lost a total of 200 million internet browser users across the world.
