What Does Islam (Muslims) Believe About Jesus?

Muslims have the highest regard for Mohammad but they also believe in Jesus. In fact, the Quran speaks many wonderful things about the head of Christianity and mentions His name Isa 25 times. He is referred to as "Spirit of God," "Word from/of God," "Word of Truth," "Servant of God" and "Messiah."

Jesus is described to be "illustrious in this world and the next and of those nearest to God," indicating that they honor Him. Muslims see Jesus as a prophet or messenger who was given a gospel that is aligned with the Torah. He also foretold the coming of the prophet Mohammad.

The Quran carries stories about Christ that are similar to that in Christianity. It tells the story of the angel's visit to Mary and confirms the virgin birth. He also performed miracles like healing the sick and raising the dead. They also believe in Christ's ascension to heaven and His second coming to fight the anti-Christ or impostor.

But the similarities end there as Muslims don't believe He is the Son of God. As a matter of fact, they consider the title blasphemous based on the following passages of the Quran:

"They say, 'God has taken to Him a son'... Say: 'Those who forge against God falsehood shall not prosper.'"

"Warn those who say, 'God has taken to Himself a son'"... a monstrous word it is, issuing out of their mouths; they say nothing but a lie."

"They are unbelievers who say, 'God is the Messiah, Mary's Son.'"

As far as Islam is concerned, Jesus is just a man but a special one that is "surpassing greatness." The exceptional miracles He performed were not attributed to His divinity. Muslims don't believe Christ was crucified. He was spared from death, rather, and raised to heaven being God's holy one. But He will come back on judgment day to die as a Muslim.
