What is Heaven Like?

The question of what heaven is like must have crossed your mind at some point in your life. Children are the most curious about the subject borne in large part by their inquisitive and imaginative nature. People who have experienced painful loss want to know how their departed loved ones are doing in heaven.

Authors have cashed in on this curiosity by writing books about the topic but they don't really answer the readers' questions due to their conflicting conclusions. The outcome shouldn't come as a surprise considering most writers have no personal knowledge about heaven.

It is truly perplexing why people wouldn't consult the Bible about heaven when it is the sole authority on the subject. They hardened their hearts to reject God's Word and conditioned their minds to accept only the knowledge that would suit the whims and fancies of their rebellious nature.

But to those who are willing to know the truth, here's the truth about heaven. It is a place referred to as God's kingdom (Matthew 7:21), His house (John 14:2) and dwelling place (Psalm 33:13). Jesus also described it to the sinner next to Him at the cross as paradise (Luke 23:43).

In other words, heaven is God's territory. Being such, only those who follow Him will gain entry, not as visitors or servants, but as residents (John 14:2-3). He gave explicit word that those who don't follow Him will not gain entry (1 Corinthians 6:9; Matthew 7:21; Revelation 21:8).

Movies and TV usually portray heaven as a place filled with clouds, but Revelation 21 describes it as having streets paved with gold, gates made of pearls and the walls made of jewels. The place is teeming with hundreds of millions of angels (Revelation 5:11).

What will do when we finally get there? There will be praising and worshipping of God for the most part (Revelation 19:1-10). But that same chapter also tells about having a new earth where God's people will reside. This means that this new heaven on earth will be administered to us in the most conducive and most perfect setting.
