Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

Most of us are suckers for love stories. You can find the toughest-looking man enjoying a chick flick with his girlfriend. That is the reason why there are blockbuster romantic-comedy movies and best-selling romance novels. That is why Valentine's Day is a commercial success.

It is just unfortunate that most people are missing out on the most beautiful love story which is God's love for mankind. The saga is actually billions of years in the making, as old as creation itself. It tells about God who loves His people so much that He even gave His own life for it even if they're not worth loving.

It started in the beginning of time when man and his Creator had a perfect relationship. Genesis 3:6 describes how man fell from God's grace through disobedience. It set off a chain reaction that drowned the world in chaos and despair brought about by man's selfishness and wickedness.

The rest of the Old Testament details man's sinful nature. On many, many occasions God tried to reach out to His people with covenants that were repeatedly broken. With hardened hearts, they rebelled against God by worshiping false deities and succumbing to wickedness.

At some point, man tried to set things right with God through good deeds and offering sacrifices, but these were never enough. Man was hopeless. The only way to redeem him was for someone great and powerful enough to pay for his sins. It had to take His Son to do that.

And so, God the Son came down to earth in the form of man and was named Jesus. His mission was to save mankind by restoring their relationship with God. This He did by dying on the cross (Isaiah 53:5). Christ gave us is the most precious gift of salvation. Without it, all our efforts to win God's mercy and favor would have remained futile (Romans 3:10).
