Sears has an extensive academic background, having earned an associate of arts degree from Tidewater Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Old Dominion University.

She also earned a master's degree from Regent University, a Virginia Beach-based evangelical Christian university founded and led by televangelist Pat Robertson.

On Wednesday, Regent University congratulated Sears on her pioneering election victory.

“Congratulations to Regent alumna Winsome Sears on being elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia! Sears earned a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership at Regent University in 2003,” tweeted Regent.
