'X-Men: Apocalypse' News, Cast Rumors: Stars Vying for Young Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm Revealed

Past "X-Men" movies have featured younger versions of the original characters. Fans have seen Mystique played by Jennifer Lawrence, Charles Xavier played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Magneto.

Now, the latest addition to the franchise, "X-Men: Apocalypse," is set to introduce younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm, originally played by James Marsden, Famke Janssen and Halle Berry respectively. The actors who are vying for the role are Taron Egerton, Jamie Blackley, and Tye Sheridan for young Cyclops; Alexandra Shipp and Zendaya Coleman for young Storm, and Sophie Turner and Saoirse Ronan for young Jean Grey.

The news of younger versions of the three X-Men characters were confirmed when it was announced last year that the part of Jean Grey was being considered for actresses Chloe Grace Moretz, Elle Fanning, and Hailee Steinfeld, while Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe, and Timothy Chalamet are being looked at for Cyclops. "Vampire Diaries" star Kat Graham was also mentioned to be up for the role of young Storm. However, Latino Report confirms that all those names were just the first round of names mentioned, and that the actors who were recently announced for the role are the ones who have actually auditioned for the film.

According to Cinemablend, Egerton is a strong contender for Cyclops as he is starring in the upcoming film "Kingsman: The Secret Service." Blackley's film credits include roles in "If I Stay," "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "The Fifth Estate." Sheridan's work can be seen in "Mud," "The Tree of Life" and "Joe."

Shipp recently starred as Aaliyah in Lifetime's biopic, "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B." Coleman is a triple threat and acted in shows like "K.C. Undercover," "Shake it Up" and "Zapped."

Turner and Ronan are both formidable contenders for the role of Jean Grey. Turner currently plays Sansa Stark in HBO's "Game of Thrones," while Ronan has nabbed an Oscar nomination for her scene-stealing role in "Atonement" and has played the lead in films like "Hanna," "The Lovely Bones" and "The Host."

"X-Men: Apocalypse" premieres on May 27, 2016.
