Xiaomi Mi 5 Release Date Confirmed; Rumored Specs Include 16MP Camera, Snapdragon 820, Android Marshmallow
It is now official. Chinese electronics company Xiaomi is going to release its next flagship smartphone next month. According to a report by CNET, the Mi 5 is going to be launched on Feb 24 at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.
The Indian Express noted that Xiaomi's co-founder and vice president Liwan Jiang had already previously revealed this information via his Weibo account. This time around, it's Xiaomi's Global Vice President Hugo Barra who confirmed the release date via Twitter saying, "#Mi5 is almost here! Xiaomi's first product launch in 2016, on February 24. It's everything you imagined, and more."
His tweet came along with an image of the number five in a blurry or ghost-like font. Ubergizmo also noted that India Head Manu Kumar Jain posted as well a confirmation for the reveal date. However, none of the confirmations revealed any details about the specs of the device. Fans or interested consumers will have to wait for the unveiling day to find out more about it.
Luckily though, the Internet is never short in leaks. There were several leaks and rumors that surfaced last month and though it's best to wait for the official details, digging through these information won't hurt anyone. If the rumors are true, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to come with 2.5G curved glass display and 3D glass panel on the back. It's also said to be equipped with Snapdragon 820 SoC and to run with Android Marshmallow.
Furthermore, the device is rumored to carry a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 13-megapixel front camera. It is said to have two variants. One will have 3 GB of RAM with 16 GB of built-in storage and the other one will have 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of storage space. It may sport a Qualcomm fingerprint sensor and may feature NFC support for seamless data transfer.
