'Zorro Reborn' confirmed, post-apocalyptic reboot starts shooting in 2016
The first of masked crusaders is now going to be introduced into this generation once again, as "Zorro Reborn" is now all set to start shooting in 2016.
According to THR, the movie received a go signal after media company Lantica agreed to finance the movie. The financing company owned by CEO Antonio Gennari will partner up with Sobini Films, owned by CEO Mark Amin, in producing the movie. On the other hand, international sales will be handled by Pantelion Films. Sobini films has also been responsible for the Oscar-winning biopic "Frida." Principal photography for the film will start in March 2016 in Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, and will soon be followed with the actual movie shooting.
As for the plot of this new movie, it's said to be taking a post-apocalyptic setting. The traditional story of Zorro is originally set in 1919 with the masked and caped stranger being a hero to peasants and farmers, while a vigilante to brutal Spanish officials controlling California. The reboot will feature the same concept but will be set in the future. Gennari was quoted saying, "Every generation has its own Zorro hero and we're proud to be able to introduce a new Zorro to this generation."
There are no news about the casts or the director for the upcoming film. However, the project had been previously connected to big director names such as Bryan Singer, Ricardo de Montreuil, Gary Whitta, and Justin Marks when it was still under 20th Century Fox.
Screenrant reports that one of the possible actors to take on the lead role is Gael Garcia Bernal. Bernal is a Mexican actor, director, and producer. He also owns Canana Films based in Mexico City. The speculation rises from the fact that Bernal is roughly the same age as Antonio Banderas, who first played the iconic role in Martin Campbell's 1998 film "The Mask of Zorro."
