2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE Release Date, Specs News; 650-Horsepower Muscle Car Gains Aero Features, Adjustable Suspension
Touted as Chevrolet's most track-capable muscle car, the 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE has reached a new performance benchmark thanks to the introduction of new racing components.
"The track-focused 1LE package offers progressive levels of performance across the Camaro lineup, from the V6 1LE to the SS 1LE. But with the new ZL1 1LE, the progression takes a quantum leap — this is the ultimate track-day Camaro," said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.
These new components allow the Camaro ZL1 1LE to reach unprecedented levels of track performance. During preliminary testing around the General Motors Milford Road Course test track, the 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE was three seconds faster than the standard ZL1 Coupe. This feat was made possible due to four key improvements.
First, the 2018 Camaro ZLE 1LE comes with new aerodynamic features including a carbon fiber rear wing, specific air deflectors and dive plans located on the front fascia. These components help the muscle car generate downforce and drive faster during turns.
The track-focused Camaro is also equipped with a racing-based adjustable suspension with lightweight Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers on the front and rear for enhanced control of the vehicle.
Moreover, the 2018 Camaro ZLE 1LE has gained lightweight forged aluminum wheels. Compared with the ZL1 Coupe, the wheels are an inch wider and an inch smaller in diameter. They are paired with new Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R summer-only tires, which deliver a more consistent grip while on the track.
Despite these additional components, the Camaro ZLE 1LE has a lighter curb weight, about 60 pounds lighter than the standard ZL1. This was accomplished by reducing the thickness of the rear glass and the incorporation of a fixed-back rear seat.
The high-performance muscle car is powered by a supercharged LT4 engine that delivers 650 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Standard features include Brembo brakes with red calipers and the 1LE logo, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Bose premium audio system, front seats with heating and ventilation and a heated steering wheel.
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZLE 1LE will arrive at dealerships later this year. Pricing will be announced closer to the official release date.
