2018 Ford Expedition Release Date, Specs News: More Aluminum, Space and Tech for Full-Size SUV
It may have taken a decade but Ford Motors has finally introduced the next-generation Expedition and the all-new full-size suburban utility vehicle (SUV) doesn't disappoint with more aluminum components, spacious interiors and the latest smart technologies.
The 2018 Ford Expedition utilizes all-new high-strength aluminum alloy for its body and frame alongside the use advanced materials. This translates to enhanced off-road and towing capabilities despite up to 300 pounds of weight savings.
It is powered by a new 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Power output has not yet been released but it will most likely be similar to the 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque that the 2018 F-150 delivers.
The powertrain comes standard with Auto Start-Stop technology and a 10-speed automatic transmission. It is also available with an electronic limited-slip differential and an intelligent 4WD system. Customers who need to tow a lot of cargo will be pleased with the Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature.
The all-new Expedition has been given an all-new Terrain Management System that allows drivers to choose between modes depending on their driving needs. The different modes include Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, Eco, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Sand and Mud/Rut.
Meanwhile, inside the full-size SUV, the cabin is more refined and spacious. It provides flexible seating for up to eight passengers and their things. There is also a sliding second-row seat for easy access to the third row, which now offers more legroom. This makes the Expedition an ideal vehicle for families during vacations or long road trips. On the other hand, with just a push of a button, the second and third rows can fold flat in order to haul cargo.
In terms of technologies offered, the 2018 Expedition features wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot, a rear seat entertainment system and the latest SYNC 3 Connect infotainment system. Seats in every row also have access to four 12-volt plugs, six USB ports and a 110-volt power outlet. Other features include a 12-speaker B&O PLAY premium audio system, a panoramic vista roof and a hands-free liftgate.
According to Ford, the all-new Expedition offers the most driver-assist technologies compared to the other full-size SUVs in the market. It is equipped with a 360-degree camera, enhanced active park assist, a lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, a collision avoidance detection system and the Blind Spot Information System.
The 2018 Ford Expedition will be available in two bodystyles — the standard model and Expedition Max, which features a longer wheelbase. There are also four trims available: XL, XLT, Limited and Platinum.
The all-new Expedition will arrive in dealerships in the fall.
