5 Most Popular Bible Verses in America Include John 3:16, Philippians 4:13

Despite the claim of naysayers, the United States is still considered a Christian country. While gloom and doom preachers proclaim that this nation is the new Sodom and Gomorrah that will be destroyed by fire and brimstone, we can still see Americans upholding the Word of God.

This may be the home of Hollywood and Las Vegas, known for the people's hedonistic lifestyle, but the biggest churches and ministries are based here, too. Pastors are reporting increased church attendance brought about by renewed interest in spirituality. Compare that to the empty churches in Europe and you'll see that we pass the standard God set in Genesis 18:33.

While Americans are not generally religious, the country holds one of the highest percentages of Bible-readers worldwide. In 2014, Bible Gateway released its list of the 10 Most Popular Bible Verses in the U.S. "based on over 1.5 billion page views and over 150 million unique visitors" to the site.

Judging from the viewed passages, it may be gleaned that the most popular verses are those that speak of encouragement. This could be a reflection of the prevailing mood of Americans over uncertainties on the country's political and economic landscape. The good news is that a significant number of them are seeking God's Word for encouragement.

Here are the top five in Bible Gateway's list of the 10 most popular verses in America:

1. John 3:16

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life."

2. Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

3. Philippians 4:13

"I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."

4. Romans 8:28

"We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose."

5. Philippians 4:6

"In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."
