Alaska Serial Killer Israel Keyes Linked to at Least 11 Deaths in US, Says FBI

Confessed Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes is thought to have killed at least 11 people, but an official count is hard to determine given the extensive travels of Keyes after the FBI produced an updated timeline of his travels and crimes.

The new timeline gives a more detailed account of the madman's movements during the years which he is thought to have carried out his most brutal crimes and also gives new insights into a case that left several unsolved murders around the U.S.

FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez said the goal of releasing the information is to identify victims who remain unknown, and provide some closure to their families.

"We've exhausted all our investigative leads," Gonzalez said.

Keyes committed suicide in jail while awaiting federal prosecution for the rape and strangulation murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, a barista who was abducted in February 2012 from the Anchorage coffee stand where she worked.

The FBI documents stated that Keyes was known to use prostitutes while traversing the nation and killed a couple in Washington state sometime between July 2001 and 2005. After he was caught, Keyes also told investigators he committed two separate murders between 2005 and 2006, disposing of at least one of the bodies in Lake Crescent, near Port Angeles, Wash.

Keyes also confessed to killing at least seven others around the country, including Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt., in 2011.

The FBI said Monday that Keyes is believed to actually have killed 11 people. Keyes told investigators his victims were male and female, and that the murders occurred in fewer than 10 states, but he did not reveal all locations or the genders of the unknown victims.

Keyes told investigators only two of his victim's bodies were ever recovered and it is not known if he ever killed outside the U.S.
