'Andi Mack' Season 2 News: Series to Introduce Disney's First LGBT Storyline
"Andi Mack" is featuring a groundbreaking storyline for its second season.
The hit series will be debuting a lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) storyline for its latest installment, according to reports. Season 2 picks up with the titular character's 13-year-old best friend Cyrus (Joshua Rush) realizing he has feelings for Andi's (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) crush, Jonah (Asher Angel).
Subsequent episodes will follow Cyrus as he starts to have a deeper understanding of himself. His struggle with telling his secret to Andi will be explored as well. He learns that he can depend on supportive pals Andi and Buffy (Sofia Wylie) who, as teenagers, are also embarking on a journey to self-discovery. Cyrus' story arc marks the first time Disney has ever depicted a character who is on a journey to discovering he is gay.
"Andi Mack is a story about 'tweens' figuring out who they are," said Disney Channel in a press statement. "(Creator) Terri Minsky, the cast and everyone involved in the show takes great care in ensuring that it's appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity."
Having debuted in April, "Andi Mack" is a teen dramedy created by the same person behind "Lizzie McGuire." The coming-of-age series follows the life of 13-year-old Andi and her relationship with her family and two best friends, Cyrus and Buffy.
BBC notes Disney coordinated with child development experts to make sure that the network developed the story in a respectful and sensitive way. They also consulted the biggest LGBTQ organization, PFLAG.
The average viewer for "Andi Mack" is 10 years old, which means it will attract the same audience who watched "Beauty and the Beast." In the 2017 live-action film, Disney featured LeFou (Josh Gad) as its first gay character.
The second season of "Andi Mack" airs Friday nights at 8 p.m. EDT on Disney Channel.
