'Avengers 4' News, Release Date: New Image Suggests Frank Grillo's Return as Crossbones
Frank Grillo might reprise his role as Crossbones in the final "Avengers" film. According to reports, Grillo might resurface in "Avengers 4" to get in the way of the Avengers' mission to take down Thanos (Josh Brolin).
Speculations about Grillo's return started when actor Robert Downey, Jr., who is set to play Iron Man in "Avengers: Infinity War," shared an Instagram photo of a benefit production of "Our Town," which according to him features some of the most fan-favorite "Avengers" stars at the Fox Theater in Atlanta.
Since featured in the photo are Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Evans (Captain America), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Danai Gurira (Okoye), and Grillo, speculations are rife that Grillo might actually be back in the franchise as Crossbones. Although some point out that the caption might only suggest a reunion of old "Avengers" cast members, for others, it might hint Grillo's upcoming involvement in the "Avengers" sequel.
Grillo's character, Hydra agent Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, was introduced in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." However, his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was cut short when the agent died in an explosion scene in "Captain America: Civil War."
Although Marvel has yet to confirm Grillo's return as Crossbones, there are speculations that if he does return, he might only appear in a flashback scene. Considering the certainty of his death in "Captain America: Civil War," there are also speculations that the Infinity Stones might bring him back to life since they are known for their strange powers to resurrect.
Specifically, it is theorized that as Thanos faces the Avengers in an epic battle, the villain will use the gems to resurrect the ghosts of the past — Crossbones included — to defeat the heroes.
Filming for "Avengers 4" is reportedly close to wrapping in Atlanta. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2019. Meanwhile, "Avengers: Infinity War" will open in theaters on May 4, 2018.
