Baby Left in Road Leads Police to 'Very Disturbing' Crime Scene

Massachusetts police are searching for answers after a baby in a car seat was left in the middle of the road. Passerby notified officials, who then discovered that the baby's 18-year-old mother and another woman, 36, were seriously injured at a nearby home.

A 32-year-old man was found dead at the scene as well.

A call to police on Saturday evening reported that an infant was left in his car seat in the middle of the road. After police responded, they began canvassing the area where the infant was left; they knocked on several doors and were given an address by one of the residents.

"Police knocked on several of the doors to that apartment but did not receive an answer. Police heard sounds of a person in distress inside the apartment, so a forced entry was conducted," an official statement given to reporters said.

Upon entry, authorities discovered the infant's mother and the other woman tied up; they had been severely injured and are still in the hospital in critical condition. Javier Maldonado, 32, died of injuries from the alleged attack, officials said. ABC News has cited authorities as describing the crime scene as "very disturbing" and "peculiar."

The infant boy is doing well and is currently in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services. Police are speculating whether there is a correlation between this weekend's attack and the shooting of an individual one mile from the crime scene.

"We have multiple resources put into this investigation," Chief Gary J. Gemme told WCVB.com. "Hopefully, we will be able to get some information and we will be able to make an arrest. Based on our preliminary investigation, we do not believe this is a random act," he added.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Worcester Police Department.
