Bears Drag Woman From FL Home, Bite Deep Into Her Scalp: 'We Got Too Comfortable'

Bears dragged a woman out of her garage when they found her in there while rummaging for food around the Orlando, Fla. suburb Saturday night. The five black bears surprised Terri Frana when she went to check on her children, who had been riding bikes in the area.

44-year-old Frana didn't have time to react as one of the bears charged at her, knocked her down, and bit into her skull right in the garage of her home in Lake Mary, Fla. From there, the 200-pound animal began to drag her outside.

"I saw this large bear charging at me," she told NBC news. "She opened her jaw and clamped down on my head, and I could just hear her teeth marks going through my scalp."

During the ordeal, the mother said she kept thinking about her children and her family.

"I said, 'Please, my kids need me,'" she recalled.

Fortunately, Frana was able to get away and made it into her house before passing out. Her son Drew, 15, found her and dialed emergency services.

While initial reports said that the Florida mom was attacked by several bears, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission corrected them, pointing out that only one bear attacked.

"There were several bears observed near the area, but one bear is responsible for her injuries," Greg Workman, a spokesman for the organization, told CNN. Four bears were killed in the area and put down Sunday night by game wardens.

Frana was left with cuts and deep scratches on her scalp and along her body. She admitted that her family had been careless after living so close to a state nature preserve for over 10 years, and that's what led to them leaving the garage door open.

"Unfortunately, we just got too comfortable with them being around," she said.
