'Beauty and The Beast' 2017 News & Updates: Is Disney's Live-Action Adaptation of Old Classic Threatened by Daring French Version? Release Date, Cast & Updates

Disney's "Beauty And The Beast" is anticipated to be the highest-grossing pre-summer movie of 2017. But this projected box office success will be challenged with the upcoming US theatrical release of the daring French adaptation of the classic fairytale.

The Feisty French Alternative

Deadline reports that the movie "Beauty and the Beast (La Belle La Bete)," a daring French take of the beloved fairytale, will be released in the US theaters starting September 23. Directed by Christophe Gans, the French film features "Spectre" actress Léa Seydoux as Belle and "Jason Bourne" star Vincent Cassel as the Beast.

The live-action French adaptation of the classic fairytale was part of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in 2014. It has already earned $49.1 million after its release in several countries.

Gans' "Beauty and the Beast" promises a huge difference from the highly anticipated Disney film. The French movie is set in 1810 and features a feisty Belle with seductive dialogues and daring outfits.

"You can't deny that the French version… looks absolutely stunning with its kaleidoscope of visual effects and gloomy aesthetic. And let's be real, could the Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel pairing be any more perfect?" Varia Fedko-Blake of Movie Plot wrote.

The Similarity of The Two Films

Although the teaser of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" did not show enough details compared to the trailer of the French version, it is expected that the two adaptations will stick to the original story of the classic fairytale.

The preview of the French movie showed an exiled merchant who was penalized to death by the Beast after he was caught stealing a rose. The merchant's daughter Belle volunteered herself in exchange of her father's life. The seductive beauty later discovered the layers of troubles behind the Beast's appearance.

Will The French Version Affect The Box Office Results of Disney's Adaptation?

With Gans' "Beauty and the Beast" coming this September, some Disney fans are worried that the French adaptation will smash the all-time high anticipation of the 2017 film. According to Fedko-Blake, there is a big possibility that the French alternative will kill the excitement about Disney's version but only time will tell.

Disney's live-action remake of the classic fairytale will be released on March 17, 2017, according to EW. The highly anticipated film stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as The Beast.

Supporting cast include Luke Evans (Gaston), Kevin Kline (Maurice), Josh Gad (Lefou), Ewan McGregor (Lumiere), Stanley Tucci (Maestro Cadenza), Ian McKellen (Cogsworth) and Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts).
