'Blue Crush' TV Reboot Under Development at NBC

"Blue Crush" is joining the endless waves of revivals hitting the small screen.

NBC is currently working on a TV reboot of the hit 2002 surf film, according to reports. The network is developing an updated version of the original movie in partnership with Imagine TV. While the new program might not feature original stars Kate Bosworth or Michelle Rodriguez, it will still center on a young female surfer on Hawaii's North Shore who tries to rebuild her career after being involved in a life-threatening situation.

"In the wake of a tragic accident, a surfer works to revive her career and bring pride to a local community threatened by commercialism and dangerous surf politics. Even in paradise, you never know what chaos is brewing inside the barrel," reads the show's official description.

Written by John Stockwell and Lizzy Weiss ("Switched at Birth"), "Blue Crush" starred Rodriguez, Bosworth, and Sanoe Lake as three friends who have a shared love for surfing.

There is still no word on whether any of the film's original cast members will have a cameo appearance or a major role in the upcoming series. However, based on popular reboots launched this year, casting actors from the flagship franchise is not that unusual.

"Blue Crush" was a big hit when it was released 15 years ago. With a budget of $25 million, the movie grossed $51 million and even spawned a direct-to-DVD sequel, which focused on a completely different story and involved none of the original stars.

The upcoming "Blue Crush" series joins the long list of revivals heading to TV soon, which includes "Roswell," "The Munsters," "True Lies," "The Jetsons," "Starsky and Hutch" and "The Nice Guys."

NBC has yet to announce a release window for the upcoming "Blue Crush" revival series.
