BMW Recall Information Released for More Than 1M Faulty Cars
Luxury car company BMW has issued a recall of just over one million cars due to a potential problem with the battery cover located in the trunk, MSNBC reports. BMW released a statement Monday detailing the problem.
"In some remote cases, the battery cable cover inside the [trunk] of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted," the company said, noting that the battery cover problem does not affect all BMW cars, but only the 5- and 6-Series cars that were produced between 2003 and 2010.
The statement explained while an incorrectly mounted battery cover could be dangerous.
"This can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire," the company revealed.
According to MSNBC, BMW said that there have not yet been any accidents, injuries, or fires resulting from the battery cover problem, although the potential for those occurrences may exist.
BMW's statement said that the problem can be fixed fairly easily. Repairs will be free of charge to car owners, and should take between 30 minutes to an hour.
The 5-series is one of BMW's less expensive cars, although it is still pricey compared to non-luxury cars of a similar size. It sells in the United States at a starting price of $47,000, according to a report by Forbes. The 6-series is a higher end BMW and it has a much steeper price tag. The 6-series usually goes for a starting price of around $70,000.
A great deal of 5- and 6-series were sold between 2003 and 2010, and the recall affects cars around the world. BMW's said that it expects to recall just over 350,000 cars in the United States. The company expects to recall nearly 300,000 cars in Germany, as well as approximately 100,000 cars in Great Britain, and another 100,000 in China. With smaller countries also contributing to the recall, BMW will in totality recall approximately 1.3 million cars.
