Boxing News 2015: Roach Says Mayweather Would Outbox Golovkin; Trainer Says Brash Tyson Fury Is 'Misunderstood'
Renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach believes that retired undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. can actually outbox knockout artist and middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin.
Meanwhile, Peter Fury, uncle and trainer to world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, believes his nephew's brash talking antics are merely misunderstood by critics.
Many people from the boxing world are apprehensive with the said match-up between Mayweather and Golovkin. Even "Money May's" own father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., is not a fan of the idea, noting that he would never let his son fight a "giant" such as "GGG". He does, however, still believe that Floyd Jr. would emerge victorious in the said fight, albeit having a difficult time doing so.
"The whole thing is, it'd be a struggle, but Floyd probably could beat him," the elder Mayweather said in a May interview with PB Insider. "I can't say that he can't beat him."
Like Mayweather Sr., Roach apparently shares the same sentiment. In a report by Boxingscene, the seven-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year awardee says Floyd Jr. had already gone through the hardest of punchers, and Golovkin would be no different.
"He's a good puncher, but I'm sure Floyd has faced a lot of good punchers in his lifetime, from the amateurs to pros," Roach said. "Not too many guys hurt [Mayweather], so I would pick Floyd to win that fight."
Meanwhile, Peter Fury responded to all critics of his nephew, newly crowned heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. The 27-year-old British champion has built a reputation as a brash-talking fighter who would use words to psyche his opponents out.
In a report by Boxingscene, the elder Fury wrote a column for The Telegraph, sharing his sentiments about his nephew. He clarifies that Tyson is a "genuinely nice guy" who has a "great personality," and mentioned that if "personality" was the basis for it, his nephew would win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award "hands down."
"He is polite to everyone," Peter Fury wrote. "He is misquoted so people can sell newspapers."
