Boxing News 2016: Accomplice Of Drug Lord El Chapo Arrested In Former Boxing Champ's Home

An accomplice of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was recently arrested in the home of former three-division world champion Fernando Montiel.

According to a report by Boxingscene, the former WBO flyweight and super flyweight champion and WBC bantamweight champion was in shock when marines entered his home in the town of Los Mochis in Sinaloa between 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning on Friday to nab the unidentified suspect.

The report adds that Montiel had heard gunshots fired around the time, prompting him to gather his kids and bring them to his bedroom. The marines then found the man in one of the rooms. The suspect was believed to be escaping the authorities when he broke into Montiel's home and deactivated the house's alarm system.

For his part, the 36-year old-boxer is merely thankful that no harm was inflicted upon him or his family.

"I can only say that God does exist and He was with me at this time," Montiel said through a Twitter post, according to the Boxing Scene report. "Thanks be to God for what I survived this morning."

Montiel was also greatly dumbfounded by the manner of which the man entered his home without him knowing, and has told authorities that he did not know of the man's identity, nor was he aware that the purpose of the said military operation was to recapture El Chapo.

The report adds that Mexican law enforcement authorities have been on the hunt for El Chapo and his men, and that they were also holding another operation in another home nearby. The said operation left five of El Chapo's men dead, while another five were also arrested, aside from the man they arrested in Montiel's home.

On the government's side, one marine was wounded.

The report also notes that after the military operation was over, the arrested suspects were then taken to the Los Mochis airport, where they were flown back to Mexico City.
