Canelo Alvarez News: Alvarez Open To Cotto Rematch, Pacquiao Fight In The Future
World middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is keeping his next options open, as far as fighting big-named opponents go.
The 25-year-old Mexican boxing sensation recently accomplished his most stellar feat when he defeated former 160-pound champion Miguel Cotto in November. Alvarez won the WBC Middleweight and Ring Magazine lineal titles, in the process.
As of the moment, Alvarez is tasked to make a ring return in May, against an opponent yet to be determined. He is, however, also slated to face undefeated Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin sometime in the fall. Golovkin also has an upcoming fight scheduled for April 23rd but as the interim WBC middleweight champion, he is deemed as Alvarez's mandatory challenger.
As a champion, Alvarez has been looking at his next possible major career move. In a report by Jose Luis Camarillo for Boxingscene, Canelo is looking at three options: Golovkin, a rematch with Cotto, or a fight against eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.
Alvarez has been vocal about his intent to face Golovkin, as he had even called out the latter during the post-fight speech after defeating Cotto. He maintains the same sentiment, noting that he is willing to face "GGG" any time.
His fight against Cotto was one that many had also questioned. While he did emerge victorious via unanimous decision, he says he is willing to give the Puerto Rican boxer a rematch. He did clarify that Cotto is not in the top of his priorities as of the moment.
"If he wants [a rematch], we can give him one," Alvarez said. "But I think right now, there are other things looming."
Pacquiao, on the other hand, would be fighting his 66th and final fight on April 9 in a rubber match against Timothy Bradley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. While Alvarez is aware that "Pacman" would be retiring after the said date, it is still something he is looking at, down the line.
"He is about to retire, but it would be an honor to have a fight with him," Alvarez said of Pacquiao.
