Canelo Alvarez News: Promoter De La Hoya Open For Alvarez Fighting At 154, Says He Would Beat Cotto In Rematch
Golden Boy Promotions head honcho Oscar De La Hoya has nothing but further praises for his superstar fighter Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
The 25-year-old Mexican boxer currently holds the lineal Ring Magazine and WBC middleweight titles, which he won from Miguel Cotto in November 2015. Alvarez won the fight via unanimous decision.
As of the moment, the next big assignment people want for Alvarez is a supposed super fight against Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin.
But according to a report by Miguel Rivera for Boxingscene, De La Hoya believes there is still good competition for Alvarez back down at light middleweight at 154-pounds. De La Hoya however, refused to name any possible opponent from the said weight class that they are currently eyeing. Alvarez was also successful as a light middleweight, having held the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine world titles.
De La Hoya also believes that should a rematch between him and Cotto happen, Alvarez would be winning a stoppage victory this time around.
"I think it would be very interesting because there were some comments and there were some people who thought Cotto won," De La Hoya said in another Boxingscene report. "For me, if there is a rematch - Canelo knocks him out, and he would knock him out without any problems."
"It would be interesting but obviously we're going to talk to Canelo and his team [about all of the possible options for May 7]," he added.
Alvarez currently holds a professional boxing record of 46-1-1, with 32 victories by knockout. He held a 42-fight undefeated streak before suffering his first career defeat against retired undefeated boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013.
Since the loss, he has won two out of his four fights by knockout. The most notable one, as of late, was his third round knockout victory over American James Kirkland via a single right hand.
