Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin: De La Hoya Declares Canelo Has The Perfect Style To Shutdown Golovkin
Six-division world boxing champion and Golden Boy Promotions head honcho Oscar De La Hoya is confident that his fighter Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will emerge victorious against Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin.
While no date has been scheduled for the supposed next middleweight super fight, both men are being targeted to meet each other inside the ring in the fall. Before then, both fighters have to take care of their respective assignments first.
Alvarez is now scheduled to make a return on May 7th, while Golovkin is eyed to come back on April 23rd. But as early as now, De La Hoya is already foreseeing a victory for the young Mexican boxing stalwart.
In a report by James Blears for Boxingscene, "The Golden Boy" first expressed his confidence that the said match up will happen as he believes the two fighters crossing paths is an inevitable event. He then gave his brief assessment about the match-up, based on the skillset and fighting styles that both men carry.
Alvarez has been known more as a boxer with the ability to finish his opponents, while Golovkin's knockout power has been his main selling point. Given the said comparison, De La Hoya believes Alvarez has what it takes to deal Golovkin his first loss, assuming the latter emerges victorious on his next fight.
"Obviously strength is one thing, but ring generalship and ring smarts is another," De La Hoya said, according to the Boxingscene report . "When you combine this with sheer power, the way that Canelo has, Saul is a very dangerous fighter, who's now maturing into his maximum strength."
De La Hoya also gave some tips on how Golovkin should deal with Alvarez, noting that "GGG" needs to come forward and press the action to gain advantage.
Golovkin (34-0, with 31 victories by knockout) last saw action in October, where he emerged victorious via an eighth round TKO against Canadian David Lemieux.
Alvarez (46-1-1 with 32 victories by knockout), on the other hand, last fought in November where he defeated Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision, en route to winning the WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight titles.
