Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin Fight News 2016: Alvarez Willing To Put Friendship On Hold For Bout

Reigning WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is willing to set aside his personal relationship with fellow world champion and interim WBC middleweight title-holder Gennady Golovkin, once they do square off in the ring.

The Mexican boxing sensation had the opportunity to spar with "GGG" in the past and the two have since been in OK terms with each other.

But after Alvarez defeated former champion Miguel Cotto in November to bag the world titles, his tune changed, and he even immediately issued a challenge to the Kazakh knockout artist after the bout.

"My respect to him, but I would put the gloves back on and fight him right now," Alvarez said during his post-fight interview. Golovkin is currently the mandatory challenger, being the interim title-holder.

The fight has yet to be scheduled, but according to a report by Miguel Rivera for Boxingscene, it is being targeted to take place in the fall.

The same report noted how Alvarez was willing to forget about being friends for a while and take care of the business at hand.

"If you come to take the fight up to the ring, you lose that friendship," Alvarez said during an awarding ceremony in Mexico City where he received the Diamond belt from the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Golovkin holds an impressive undefeated record of 34-0, with 31 victories by knockout. He last saw action in October 2015, against Canadian David Lemieux, where he emerged victorious via an eighth round technical knockout.

His last decision victory came in 2008, and since then, every match has been a stoppage victory.

Alvarez did recognize Golvokin's skills and capabilities, noting how the Kazakh fighter has "a lot of power".

But for him, his main task as an elite prizefighter is to face and take care of whoever is put in front of him.

"I've always said that's why I am a professional boxer and I will fight with anyone. If I have to fight him, I'm ready to do it," Alvarez said.
