Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin: 'GGG's Coach Hopeful Alvarez Would 'Keep Promise' And Make Fight Happen

Renowned boxing trainer Abel Sanchez is hopeful that middleweight world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez would live up to his previous statements of making the Gennady Golovkin fight a reality.

Alvarez immediately called out the undefeated Kazakh knockout artist after winning the WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight titles against former 160-pound champion Miguel Cotto in November. Both Alvarez and Golovkin have respective assignments lined up in the coming months.

The 25-year-old Mexican boxer is slated to return and defend his title on May 7, while "GGG" will be coming back on April 23 in New York. As the WBC interim middleweight champion, Golovkin is the mandatory challenger for Alvarez's title.

In an interview with Boxingscene, Sanchez says he is hoping that Alvarez does live up to his previous statements.

"You know I am looking at April 23rd," Sanchez said. "Once we get passed April 23rd then I sure hope that Canelo lives up to everything he has said and everythng he has guaranteed to the WBC and everything he has promised his fans but that is up to Canelo and not up to us."

Multiple reports have claimed that should Alvarez refuse to face Golovkin, the latter automatically becomes the undisputed WBC middleweight champion. Alvarez had already laid out the first condition of the fight, noting that he is not willing to go past 155-pounds, a pound higher than his natural weight at light middleweight.

Both fighters are coming off impressive streaks. Alvarez (46-1-1, with 32 victories by knockout), has won four straight fights since his first career loss against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013. Two of those victories ended by knockout.

Golovkin, on the other hand, has remained undefeated since he began his professional boxing career in 2006.

With a record of 34-0, woth 31 victories by knockout, the last time his fight went to the judges' scorecards was in 2008. He has since won stoppage victories, with the most recent one against Canadian David Lemieux. The fight ended via an eighth round technical knockout.
