Canon Announces 1D X Mark II, Includes 20.2MP Sensor And 4K Video Capability

After Nikon announced its flagship camera during the CES a few weeks ago, Canon now unveiled the EOS-1D X Mark II. The Verge detailed that the successor of the EOS-1D X is a device that is targeted specifically for professional sports photographers and photojournalists, which means that it's not really recommended for photographers who are just starting.

The camera is equipped with a full-frame 20.2-megapixel sensor that can take up to 14 fps with autofocus and 16 without. Digital Trends also noted that it makes use of a 35mm CMOS sensor and two Digic 6+ image processors, giving the new model a fresh level of performance as no other Canon pro cameras have such a feature. The standard ISO speed is the same—100 to 51200. However, the camera's expanded ISO has the capability to go from 50 to 409600 for excellent low-light performance.

The device is also perfect for videography because of its 4K video capacity which can capture up to 60 frames per second. Mashable also reported that the camera can record in full HD at up to 120 fps to produce a slow-motion effect. Aside from that, there is a feature called "Frame Grab" which allows the user to pluck out 8.8-megapixel still JPEG pictures from the 4K video.

Users can also make use of the touchscreen LCD as it can let them choose any of the focus points by simply selecting the area on the screen. However, its use is limited only to that as it does not have a touchscreen-ready UI that can support pinch-to-zoom and swipes.

According to the Digital Trends report, one will not find a built-in focus peaking or zebra functions, but they can be added through an external recorder that is affixed via clean HDMI signal. The camera is also designed with two memory card slots. One is for CompactFlash while the other one is for the much faster (and more costly) CFast.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is priced at $5,999 for body only and it will cost $6,299 to come with a kit that includes a 64GB CFast memory card and card reader. The camera is expected to arrive by April.
