'Captain America: Civil War' News, Spoilers: War Machine's Storyline Is 'Intense' And 'Pivotal,' Don Cheadle Reveals

Most of the talk about the highly anticipated "Captain America: Civil War" has been about the superhero triangle of Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan); the introduction of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman); and the return of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (William Hurt). Though fans did see him looking unconscious (or dead) in a field with Iron Man in the film's teaser, not much has been said about James Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle).

The character didn't see much action in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015) and did not appear at all in "The Avengers" (2012). This time, however, Iron Man's loyal friend is reportedly taking on a bigger, "more intense" role that will be "pivotal" to the "Civil War" story.

Speaking from the Sundance Film Festival, where he was promoting his directorial debut in the film "Miles Ahead," Cheadle talked to SuperHeroHype a bit about "Captain America: Civil War."

The actor said: "I never know what it's going to be and they keep their cards very close to their breast with Marvel." He added, "I never know where the character's going to go, but he's become more and more and in the next one, you'll see that what happens to Rhodey is a little bit more intense and pivotal to what happens in the rest of the stories."

As Marvel fans know, Cheadle made his War Machine debut in "Iron Man 2" (2010), taking over the role previously played by Terrence Howard. He put the War Machine suit on for a second time in "Iron Man 3" (2013).

Cheadle did not elaborate about how his character's story will be "pivotal," leaving fans to wonder if perhaps something happens to War Machine that will then affect Iron Man's actions in the war. Did he, in fact, die in that scene where his suit is mangled up and there is smoke in the background?

"Captain America: Civil War" hits the big screen on May 6.
