Chelsea Manager News: Guus Hiddink Appointed As First-Team Manager Until End Of Season
Chelsea Football Club recently announced the appointment of new manager Guus Hiddink.
In a report by the team's official website ChelseaFC.com on December 19th, the 69-year-old Dutch football veteran will be the first-team manager until the end of this season. Hiddink is no stranger to the Chelsea Football Club system, as he also took on an interim role at team helm in 2009.
During that time of his leadership, the team only lost one league game. He also held other managerial and coaching jobs for various national teams, such as South Korea, Russia, Turkey, and the Netherlands. During his time as the coach of the South Korean national team, he was able to lead them to a fourth-place finish at the 2002 World Cup.
As the manager of the Russian national team, which began in 2006, Hiddink was able to help them land a semi-finals spot at the Euro 2008. For his part, Hiddink looked forward to his return to Stamford Bridge, while promising to once again lead the team to success.
"I am looking forward to working with the players and staff at this great club and especially renewing my wonderful relationship with the Chelsea fans," Hiddink said. As the interim manager of the Chelsea Football Club, Guus Hiddink already laid out his immediate plans for the team.
In another report by Sky Sports, he shared his intent to recruit veteran striker Didier Drogba. Currently playing for Canada's Montreal Impact, the 37-year-old native of Abidjan, Ivory Coast played a year's stint with Chelsea, from 2014-2015.
He was also able to lead his national team to its first World Cup appearance in 2006. Hiddink feels Drogba is a perfect fit for Chelsea, noting he wants to "get him involved".
"We want to get important players involved with the club they care about," said Hiddink. "Drogba's heart is with Chelsea."
Meanwhile, an Express report writes that Drogba is encouraging Hiddink to bring back Romelu Lukaku.
