Claire Danes on Vogue: 'I Was Stuck' With No Work for 2 Years
Despite her recent success, Claire Danes admits that she nearly lost hope on her acting career at one point.
While the bright lights of Hollywood may seem alluring, making it into the industry is not always easy. In a recent interview "Homeland" actress Claire Danes admitted that getting her start as an actress took a lot of perseverance, even after she starting winning awards.
"I was stuck," the 34-year-old says in the August 2013 issue of Vogue. "It was confusing. I got a lot of plaudits, and it didn't translate into more work. I was really, really struggling during that time."
It was only three years ago that Danes thought that all hope might be lost. Struggling to get by, she even considered a career change.
"It was grim. I was very hurt. Two years of not working was brutal," she said. "And a point came where I thought, 'I really like interior design.'"
To help stay strong, Danes reached out for advice from some of Hollywood's biggest personalities, including Meryl Streep. In a lot of ways, the advice these women offered her was advice that any woman could use.
"You have to pick your battles on set. You have to come to work from a place of love. You have to stay hydrated when you have crying scenes. You have to go to college. And you have to ask for money because there's always more money and they won't give it to you because you're a girl!" the actress remarked recalling the advice that she had been given.
Commenting on her admiration for Streep and the type of actress that she would like to be, Danes suggested that she would like to herself in tact.
"There's the movie star that plays herself and the movie star like Meryl that has this wonderful, glamorous persona intact and is undone every time she takes on a new character," she told the magazine.
