Colorado Rockies MLB Trade and Roster Rumors: Team Interested in Free Agent Reliever Addison Reed

Looks like the Colorado Rockies really want to put together the best bullpen in the National League.

The Rockies re-signed left-hander Jake McGee to a three-year deal and secured Bryan Shaw's services last week, but it would seem that they weren't done upgrading their bullpen. According to FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman, the Rockies appear to be focused on building a "super bullpen" and they have been talking to free-agent reliever Addison Reed.

Heyman added that they have also been "in touch" with All-Star relief pitchers Greg Holland and Wade Davis.

Well, the Rockies are certainly ambitious because those are three of the top relievers available on the open market this offseason. It will be interesting to see if they can sign all three of them.

If they can't, MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams thinks they should make signing Reed their top priority.

"The Rox were reportedly in advanced talks about a deal to bring Holland back to Denver (even after agreeing to sign both Shaw and McGee), but there's been very little information on that front in the past week," Adams said in his column.

"Pivoting to Reed could give the Rox a potentially more affordable late-inning option that is actually coming off a superior year to the one Holland just completed," he continued.

"Reed won't turn 29 until next week, making him one of the youngest available free agents on the market — certainly the most youthful among established relievers," he added.

Reed is definitely an interesting option because of his closing experience. He has played the closer role for the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and New York Mets in previous seasons, but he was also effective as a late-inning reliever for the Boston Red Sox last season.

Reed finished the 2017 season with a 2-3 record, and he had 76 strikeouts in 76 innings pitched. He also posted a 2.84 earned run average (ERA) and a 1.05 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP).
