Conor McGregor News: Coach Says Frankie Edgar 'Would Have To Wait' For Title Shot Against 'The Notorious'

Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar put on one of his best performances as of late during The Ultimate Fighter Finale, the day before the UFC 194 showdown between Conor McGregor and José Aldo on December 12th.

"The Answer" knocked out two-time featherweight title contender Chad Mendes in the first round of their main event fight, which supposedly earned him the next 145-pound title shot. During the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White openly declared to the media personalities in attendance that Edgar "could have whatever he wanted."

For his part, Edgar has constantly been vocal about fighting "The Notorious" through various social media posts. McGregor, on the other hand, had previously said during his own post-fight press conference that he prefers to fight for the 155-pound title instead.

McGregor's own coach John Kavanagh recently reiterated this statement. In an interview with The42, the trainer of Dublin's Straight Blast Gym confirmed that his fighter would indeed by contending for the 155-pound strap.

Kavanagh specifically noted his growing apprehension about McGregor's cut to his current weight class at 145-pounds.

"The next step will be winning the title in the 155lbs division," Kavanagh said in the interview.

"Regardless of who comes out on top, we've been given the green light to fight the winner," he added.

Rafael dos Anjos did emerge victorious against Donald Cerrone during his own fight at UFC on FOX 17 in Orlando, Florida this weekend. As for McGregor, Kavanagh believes that the fight for the lightweight belt would be happening in April.

He did, however, leave a message for former champion José Aldo and Frankie Edgar, who are still aching to have a crack at the Irishman and his 145-pound world title belt.

"If Frankie Edgar wants a shot at the featherweight title or Aldo wants a rematch, we're fine with that too," Kavanagh said. "But they'll have to wait, because that lightweight belt is next on the agenda."
