Couple Finds $13,000 in Garbage, Locates Missing Owner

A Tennessee couple has defied expectations after finding $13,000 in bag on top of a garbage bin outside their local grocery store. The couple decided to look for the money's owner, and unable to locate him or her, they turned it over to police.

As Kristy Allen waited for her husband Ken to return from the store, she noticed the bright blue bag on top of the garbage bin. Because it was so unusual, Kristy urged Ken to retrieve the bag in case someone was missing it.

"It could have been a purse, and I don't mess with women's purses," Ken told ABC News. "So I brought it to the car, and when we opened it we saw hundreds of hundred-dollar bills, at which point my wife said, 'Lock the door!'"

The amount turned out to be $13,000, a shock to the couple. A wallet was also found, and the couple tried to reach the owner of the bag by going to the address listed on a driver's license. No one was home, and no neighbors remembered ever seeing the man pictured on the ID.

After continuing to search, the couple returned home and then took the money to the police the following morning. Police were surprised at the good deed, and believe they have located the bag's owner.

The man was in the hospital at the time the bag went missing and was able to claim his bag and the missing money.

"When he called, I asked, 'Dude, why did you have so much money?' Ken said. "He didn't really explain that, but he did say he was very grateful to have it back and was glad we were the ones who found it."

Ken also explained that he believed the couple was "meant" to find the bag.

"Most other people would throw a big party. The only reason we were able to do the right thing is because my wife doesn't miss anything. My wife told me from the beginning we had to give it back."
