Dell Wyse 3040: Smallest, Lightest, Most Power-Efficient Thin Client Launched
Dell recently announced the launch of the newest addition to their thin client portfolio. Called the Dell Wyse 3040, the company heralds the device as its smallest, lightest and most power-efficient thin client yet.
The Dell Wyse 3040, currently priced at $329, is specifically designed to be a cost-effective endpoint solution for virtualized desktop infrastructure (VDI). It is also compatible with Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft RDS and VMWare Horizon.
A new operating system will also be launched alongside the Wyse 3040, and it will be custom-tailored for use with Dell's thin client devices. In an interview with IT PRO, Dell's senior vice president and general manager for client solutions, Steve Lalla, revealed that the Wyse ThinOS will be arriving with several security and management features.
"Having a bare-metal OS that is tightly locked-down and managed, we think is increasingly important for those customers who are dealing with the concerns around data leakage or data loss," Lalla said.
The Wyse 3040 is built with four USB ports, including one USB 3.0 port intended for high-speed data transfer as well as device charging. It also comes with Ethernet support and two DisplayPort interfaces with a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels.
The device runs on a quad-core Intel Atom X5 1.44 GHz processor and is capable of supporting up to 2 GB of DD3 memory and as much as 8 GB of flash storage. However, wireless networking support will only be added later on within the year.
Lalla also discussed how important thin client solutions are in helping companies and organization create a flexible as well as agile workplace and in improving the efficiency and performance of the employees.
"We have customers who will set up hundreds of workstations with thin clients, with monitors, and as employees come and go, they actually just sit down at any workstation that's available, and the ability for them to log in and get their personal desktop or their personal app catalogue and do work provides for an incredibly flexible in-office environment," he said.
