He has reportedly been attacked in prison, leaving him with a broken leg and fingers, after an unnamed New York crime boss put a $100 bounty on his head for being a "rat," according to the Mail Online.

It has been reported that the 34 year old's psychiatrist accidentally revealed he had told police about his drug suppliers, David and Eduardo Escalera, during a bail hearing in 2010. His co-operation with police in that way was said to have been one of the main reasons he had his sentence reduced to five years, instead of 10 years in prison.

However, the troubled son of the Hollywood actor has found it hard to stay out of trouble, and he was given an additional four-and-a-half years on his sentence in 2011 for smuggling heroin and a prescription narcotic into prison while at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Pennsylvania.

According to The New York Post, a source has said, "He (Cameron Douglas) broke his femur, which is hard to snap, and had to have a rod inserted."

After Cameron's sentence was handed down in 2010, actor Michael Douglas sought to take some of the blame, saying he had been a "bad father." However, he said that prison could be a "blessing in disguise" as without something drastically changing in his life he was going to be "dead or somebody was gonna kill him. I think he has a chance to start a new life, and he knows that."

When his additional sentence was given last year, the judge in the case told him he had "blown the biggest opportunity of his life."

The furious judge gave Cameron a sentence twice as long as prosecutors had been pushing for, and also halted all family visits to Cameron for two years.

He is not eligible for release until 2018.
