'Downton Abbey' Season 5: Episode 5 Recap

Last Sunday on "Downton Abbey," Robert gets into a brawl with Bricker and Rosamund and Violet plots to take Marigold away from the Drews.

Rosamund is in London and is curious about Edith's daughter and knows that Marigold is hidden away at the Drews. She asks to see the child and Edith thinks that this is a good idea since she was looking for an excuse to drop by, since on her last visit, farmer Tim's wife Margie told her to go away. The two go to see the child, and Margie is suspicious of Rosamund and starts being protective of Marigold.

When they left, Margie tells Tim that she feared this would happen, and that Edith would be showing the child to her relatives as if she was a toy. Tim tells Edith that she should go and that she shouldn't go back to see Marigold anymore.

Edith is clearly saddened by this, and her moroseness doesn't escape Violet's eagle eye. Violet then demands that Rosamund should tell her what's going on. After Rosamund tells her about the child, the two approach Edith and tell her about a plan. They would send the child to a school in France where she will be taken care of, but Edith won't get to see her. Violet and Rosamund kept on convincing Edith until she relented.

Meanwhile, Bricker drops by the estate again and Cora greets him. Robert is on his way out and he greets Bricker. Later, Bricker enters Cora's bedroom and tells her that he waited until her maid has gone. Cora is having none of it and tells him to leave. Robert comes home and as he heads upstairs, Bricker is telling Cora that there is something between them. Robert comes into the room and is surprised to see Bricker there. Cora tells him that she didn't invite Bricker into the room and that he was just leaving.

Bricker tells Robert that it was terrible the way Cora was ignored and that he was blind to do so. Robert backhands Bricker across the face and they grapple on the floor. Edith comes to find out what the commotion is all about, and Cora said that she and Robert knocked over a lamp. Cora lets Bricker out, and Robert says that he'll be sleeping in his dressing room.

"Downton Abbey" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on PBS.
