'Fallout 4' News: Bethesda Reveals Gun Combat Was Inspired by 'Destiny'
The new gun combat in the video game "Fallout 4" was inspired by Bungie's RPG/first-person shooter game "Destiny," game developer Bethesda revealed recently.
"Fallout 4" appears to have increased the quality of its combat by improving the VATS system and incorporating a tighter gunplay, based on what fans saw at the E3. What most people do not know is that the games shooting mechanics were largely drawn from Bungie's FPS/RPG hybrid game "Destiny," according to Game Rant (GR).
Because both games run at 30 fps, "Fallout 4" can perfectly derive inspiration from "Destiny" for its gun combat system. In its recent revelation, Bethesda said they did this because they were thinking big for the game, the report relays.
"The main difference in the way we develop [and other studios] is that we will develop with as many knobs as possible … " GR quotes Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard's statement to Game Informer. "We knew we were going to have thousands, so we needed to develop a gun system that had all of the dials."
Earlier this year, Howard said they were steering toward a first-person shooter game, and they were determined to produce really good results with "Fallout 4." They even sought help from Doom developer iD software for guidance on crafting quality weapon mechanics, Forbes reports.
In the previous "Fallout" installation, the shooting mechanics were quite bland, so Bethesda made it a mission to improve them in "Fallout 4." Modeling the gunplay after "Destiny" is a wise move because the latter has already amassed at least 25 million players and Bungie is an established FPS developer, the report explains.
One of the factors that helped Bethesda successfully put together the new gunplay is the arrival of Josh Hamrick, a former "Destiny" designer, who is now a Bethesda senior systems designer. The company needed someone experienced in the field to work on "Fallout 4."
"Fallout 4" will be officially released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on Nov. 10.
